Did you know that today, March 2, is Dr. Seuss’s birthday? What better day for a post about the best Dr. Seuss books for toddlers?
Dr. Seuss was born 116 years ago today in Springfield, Massachusetts. Dr. Seuss is one of the greatest known and loved children’s authors, and also one of the most prolific. He wrote and illustrated over 60 children’s books! By the time of his death in 1991, he had sold over 600 million copies of his books, and they had been translated into 20 different languages.
Fun fact, Dr. Seuss is NOT a real doctor, it’s just a pen name he picked up as an undergrad at Dartmouth. His real name is Theodor Seuss “Ted” Geisel.
In 1997, Dr. Seuss’s birthday was designated by the National Education Association as National Read Across America Day. Check out their website for tons of great book recommendations and ideas to spark a love of reading in your child. Another great resource is Seussville. It’s the official Dr. Seuss website and features games and activities inspired by Seuss’s books.
Today I want to recommend my favorite Dr. Seuss books specifically for toddlers. These books are perfect for chubby hands and sticky fingers, and have bright colors and illustrations to hold their interest. Like all of the best Dr. Seuss books they feature crazy characters and made-up words, which is bread and butter for a toddler. As my daughter would say, “that’s silly, mommy!” as she giggles in delight.
