These literary quotes from authors and poets talk about the magic of reading and books. Sometimes you need a motivational push to jump-start your appreciation of reading, and these quotes are perfect for giving you that push.

the dangerous alphabet neil gaiman

Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite storytellers for both children and adults. He has a remarkable ability to transport the reader into the most realistic dream world. Some of his most popular children’s books include the New York Times Bestsellers Coraline and The Dangerous Alphabet.

Frederick Douglass was an abolitionist, successful writer and orator, and later in life a diplomat. His quote is especially poignant as he himself was a former slave who taught himself to read. He also wrote that “knowledge is the pathway from slavery to freedom.” Douglass was living proof against the common slaveholder argument that slaves were too unintelligent to become independent American citizens.

Eek, this quote struck a chord with me. I have a bad habit of buying books then not reading them, especially books bought for cheap at thrift stores or library sales. Don’t I need this vintage hardcover book on how to watercolor for $0.50?! Luckily, I’ve become wise to myself and try not to create so much clutter. And the books I do end up buying I make sure I read them and not just display them proudly on the shelf.

What a great quote! Stories are universal, reaching across time and place and age! Although kids may not be as knowledgeable as adults, they are not stupid. They are capable of enjoying a good story. And of course, a good story makes the parent more likely to read to the child, which encourages the child to read, and ties into my next quote.

This inspirational quote shows that the love of reading begins with YOU, the parent. You can change a child’s life for the better by making reading a habit. My two siblings and I all enjoy reading. Going to the library together was a weekly habit in our household. Dad would read us a chapter of Little House in the Big Woods or Farmer Boy at bedtime. Our parents set a good example.

My two cents – don’t throw your TV set away, maybe just install the lovely bookshelf next to it! TV can be a great way to help children learn, it’s relaxing and entertaining. What I take from this quote is not to let your children become mindless TV zombies.

Many of Walt Disney’s original movies were inspired by fairy tales and books. Did you know that The Jungle Book, Mary Poppins, Pinocchio, and One Hundred and One Dalmations were all based on books? At the time, Disney was at the forefront of animation and inspired a transition of storytelling from reading to watching movies and TV.

Can a list of quotes be complete without one from Dr. Seuss? He has several other great quotes (“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”) but this is my favorite. I envision a beautiful cottage with all my favorite things: family, a large kitchen, and lots of books in all the crannies and nooks.

This is the last line of a longer poem called “The Reading Mother” by Stickland Gillilan that shows the value of reading together as a family. It’s worth a read. The poem is public domain, I found it here.

Reading can open your eyes to so many different points of view, stories, worlds, and other people’s perspectives. It can spark an interest that can motivate the reader to change their life for the better.
