Here’s what my family is reading this week, and what we found at the Goodwill bookstore:
Goodwill Bookstore Finds
I picked up a huge bag of books from our local Goodwill bookstore last week. I love used bookstores and had no idea that Goodwill operates some of their stores specifically for books!
Our local store has a nice section just for kids with a child-sized puzzle table laid out and visually appealing shelf displays. I was very impressed with the book selection too, it is well-curated with all the junk weeded out. Books were reasonably priced from $0.75 to several dollars, with classic books and bestsellers selling for more $$.

I found a couple of award-winning books I’ve been wanting to read:
Stellaluna, which won the 1996 Grammy award for Best Spoken Word Album for Children.
The Snowman, one of our favorite wordless picture books and a runner-up for the British Kate Greenaway medal.
And The Snowy Day, winner of the 1963 Caldecott Medal, a perfect read for winter.
We picked up some board books for baby boy. I’m excited to try A Book of Sleep by Il Sung Na. I got some Sandra Boynton board books too in preparation for an Author Spotlight article I’m planning on writing.
Ava found several books about Easter.
And I was very excited to grab some classics from my childhood!

What the Baby is Reading:
Will is enjoying Moo, Baa, La La La by Sandra Boynton, mostly to chew on for now.
What the Toddler is Reading:
Ava is enjoying classic Curious George and Clifford the Big Red Dog. She recognizes Clifford from the TV show and was excited to try the books! Her current favorite book this week is a Valentine’s Day gift from M’ma (aka Elizabeth from A Grandmother’s Library Shelf). My First Piano Book is a fun little keyboard that you can play with six different instrument sounds, or play along with ten songs. The attached illustrated songbook shows you where to place your fingers and when to play.
What the Grownups Are Reading:
I’ve been trying to read the last two books in the Crimson Lake trilogy by Candice Fox since last year. I zipped through Crimson Lake as a beach vacation read and haven’t had a chance to start the other two. Reading scary stories on Reddit is distracting me from reading real books!
Steve keeps talking about finishing a Vince Flynn novel he started several years ago and is gathering dust on his bedside table. He has discovered TikTok despite not being a 14 year old so that takes up his reading time, although I admit the stuff he shows me is pretty funny.
After writing this post I’ve come to the realization that our children are much better readers than us, but that’s okay, right? You’re supposed to raise the kids to go do bigger and better than you. Show them the world so they can reach for the stars! Although now I have a new plan to be a better role model and try to read more!
