Goodnight Moon

From Back of the Bookshelf to Fan Favorite

I remember buying a board book copy of the beloved children’s classic Goodnight Moon for my daughter just after she was born. I was in the midst of new child preparedness and wanted to build the perfect library for my baby. (Here’s what I ended up with!)

Goodnight Moon was a favorite of mine growing up, and I was sure that she would love it too.

We tried reading Goodnight Moon several times but it was never a hit. Other books became clear favorites and Moon was pushed to the back of the bookshelf. I was a little disappointed, but we moved on and discovered so many new and wonderful different books.

One day, when my daughter was around one and a half, she stumbled on Goodnight Moon. We pulled it out and gave it a read, and it immediately became her favorite, preferred book read of the night!

I think that certain books speak to certain ages, and in her case, she was just not mature enough to enjoy this book to its full extent. As she aged, she became aware of all the tiny details of the room in Goodnight Moon and was able to point out and name the mouse on every page. She would point to the rising moon and say moon!

All the details which make this book so engaging were there all along, she just was not able to process them until now.

The publishers recommend this book for children ages 4-8. I highly recommend Goodnight Moon for a young child. She’s two and a half now and it’s still a favorite.

And what I learned, as with any book, is that sometimes now is not the right time for a child to read it. Don’t give up, keep the book around, and in time it could become a fan favorite.
