Taurus: April 20 – May 20
It’s time for more fun with the astrological star signs!
Four out of five family members were born under the Taurus sun sign, so I’ve had plenty of time to observe these sweet, practical, loving, down-to-earth characters. Venus is their planet, so they like nice things that appeal to the senses. They might be a tad possessive, and frankly, change is not their thing.
Here are five children’s books that illustrate the typical characteristics of the sign, and are sure to appeal to your young Taurus.
Picture Books for Taurus Children
Fancy Nancy, by Jane O’Connor, illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser
Venus is the special planet that represents Taurus, and we might as well admit it – a big element of the Venus influence is beauty in all things, and more of it! Fancy Nancy likes things all gussied up, whether it’s her foods, her decorations, her events, her surroundings. She likes sparkles from her tiara to her shiny shoes, and she wants to bring her family into the fun of it.
The Carrot Seed, by Ruth Krauss, illustrated by Crockett Johnson
Taurus children aren’t usually overly talkative, and this book isn’t either. At just 101 words, it tells the story of a little boy who plants a carrot seed and waits patiently for it to grow. His family says it won’t grow, but he carries on and trusts that it will grow – as indeed it does. A Taurean enjoys nature and can be stubborn persistent in their endeavors. He carries his task though and is rewarded for his work.
The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf, illustrated by Robert Lawson
Ferdinand is a bull who lives in the country, and “he liked to just rest quietly and smell the flowers.” The other bulls like to run about and butt heads with each other, but Ferdinand prefers to live quietly on his own. When the matadors come to choose the wildest bull for the bullfights in Madrid, though, Ferdinand gets a bee sting. He jumps and snorts and is chosen for the bullfight, but his quiet nature prevails. Taurus likes to live and let live, but he can be pushed to anger.
Digger, Dozer, Dumper, by Hope Vestergaard, illustrated by David Slonim
This is my favorite book about vehicles and it is the kind that will enchant any child who loves trucks and machines, especially a little Taurus. These children are practical and like to know how things work, and Digger, Dozer, Dumper does not disappoint! This book appeals to boys and girls alike, and describes a variety of vehicles and their characteristics:
“The backhoe’s two machines in one; a useful little truck.
His front-end pushes dirt and rock; his back end digs out muck.”
Bread and Jam for Frances, by Russell Hoban, illustrated by Lillian Hoban
This book speaks to Taurus children on many levels. They love to eat. They may get attached to certain things and cling stubbornly to them, as Frances insists on her bread and jam. She knows she’ll always be pleased with bread and jam, so she resists trying new things. Her parents wisely serve her bread and jam at every meal, and with the help of her friend Albert, who has hearty and varied lunch (“’I like a good lunch’, said Albert”), she finally embraces a change. She takes great care with her lunch, with a lace doily and a napkin for style, and enjoys the very delicious meal.
