Celebrations across the world
With the holiday season in the US right around the corner (too soon, right!?), I’m looking forward to writing about my favorite Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas books.
And as I start reading to Ava about our holidays and traditions, I want to include other culture’s holidays as well. It’s so important to expose young children to different holidays and traditions. This leads to respect and empathy for different people around the world. And what better way to introduce this to a young child but through picture books?
Celebrate the World Board Books
One of my favorite book series is the Celebrate the World board books by Hannah Eliot. This book series features holidays and celebrations from different cultures around the world. The series currently has four books in the collection, and I’m hoping more will be added soon. A really cool feature is that each book is illustrated by an artist from a country where the holiday is primarily celebrated. Dia de los Muertos is illustrated by Golden Globe award-winning Mexican artist Jorge Gutierrez. Lunar New Year features beautiful watercolors by Chinese Illustrator Alina Chau.
The holidays currently featured are Dia de los Muertos, Ramadan, Diwali, and Lunar New Year. All the books are recommended for children ages 4-8 and are a great way to introduce young children to different cultures and celebrations. Each Celebrate the World book explains what the holiday is about and why it’s celebrated, who it’s celebrated by, and how each culture celebrates that specific holiday. I especially enjoy reading different traditions and foods that each culture uses to celebrate.
So celebrate the world! Add these books to your holiday book collection and expand your child’s knowledge of the world.
Read to them the world, so they can reach for the stars!
